Do Not Disturb - New Feature from Apple on the iPhone

Apple have a wonderful new feature coming out on the iPhone and iPad called Do Not Disturb.

Essentially it is a feature that will allow your phone to remain switched on and receive alerts, but these alerts will not light up the screen, or cause the phone to ring or to vibrate while you have the iphone in Do Not Disturb mode.

As well as phone calls, Do Not Disturb prevents you from being disturbed by push notifications, emails, text messages, game alerts and more.

Having the Do Not Disturb feature will be great for people who like to use their iPhone or iPad as an alarm, and thus need to keep it on but don't want to be bothered all night by incoming alerts.

The feature is a part of the new iOS 6 operating system that powers the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. iOS 6 is currently in BETA, and is only available to people with an Apple Developer Account. It is expected to be released to the general public later in 2012.

Why not just use Airplane Mode?
Airplane mode is a handy feature to stop all incoming alerts altogether. The advantage of Do Not Disturb is the fact that your alerts are there waiting for you on your phone when you get up, and you don't need to turn any modes on or off. Also the ability for emergency calls to get through is handy, which I will discuss later.

Will it work on my current iPhone or iPad?
A lot of the features for iOS 6, including Do Not Disturb will work on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, the iPad 2 and iPad 3 (known as The New iPad) and the iPod Touch 4th generation.

What about in an emergency? People won't be able to reach me!
There is a special feature that you can turn on while in Do Not Disturb mode called Repeated Calls. If someone rings you within 3 minutes from the same number, the phone will alert you to the second attempt if you have this turned on. You can also set the iPhone to allow calls from your "Favorites" if you want.

Do I have to set Do Not Disturb each night when I go to bed?
No. You can schedule the feature to automatically start operating at a certain time.

How can I get iOS 6 on my phone?
I will write a special article about upgrading to iOS 6 at a later date when it is available.
